In Place: Drawing You Outside

Jackson Park’s Wooded Island, Chicago, IL, 60637

Interactive outdoor performance

September 24 and 25, 4 - 6 pm

Free and open to the public, art materials provided

Artist’s Note: In Place: Drawing You Outside is a collaboration between dancer/choreographer Irene Hsiao and visual artist Christine Forni. This work is a combination of two of our existing projects. In Place is a community art project Irene began at the Smart Museum with an outdoor movement score and a score combining landscape and portraiture . In Drawing You Outside, Christine leads participants in drawing in nature using charcoal she makes from sticks collected in the area.

On September 24 and 25 from 4 to 6pm, we invite people to join us for an experience that will combine drawing with live music and dance performances on Jackson Park's Wooded Island. Christine will lead audience participants through a survey of the view of the landscape and the nature surrounding them. This drawing exercise begins with a walk in the woods. The participants will be encouraged to write about their experiences along the walk such as the sounds, the smell, and they will be guided to see how light interacts and moves through nature. Participants will encounter live site-specific dance and music performances as they move through the Wooded Island, encounter Yoko Ono's Skylanding sculpture, and enter the Garden of the Phoenix, where, together, performers and participants will activate the garden in an hour of collective and collaborative artmaking. At the end, participants and performers will share their work with each other.

On October 16, from 12-4pm, Irene will screen the community-sourced In Place videos as well as imagery from the live performance at High Concept Labs as part of Mana Contemporary's Open House.

Both experiences are free and open to the public -- art supplies will be provided on Sept 24-25.
